Test Content

The SAT contains questions in two main categories: Evidence-based Reading and Writing, and Math. There are four test sections: Reading, Writing and Language, Math (no calculator), and Math (calculator). The test contains multiple-choice questions with four possible answers, as well as student-produced response questions (grid-ins). There is no penalty for guessing.

The SAT will be transitioning to fully digital in the U.S. as of March 2024. For a comprehensive account of all the format changes, and details about how the new SAT compares to the unchanged ACT, read here.
